I had a great time playing around with different social posts in this class and learning about new social platforms + some of my classmates' businesses. It's really cool to see how people right in my community are working hard to make their businesses as good as they can be!
I don't think my viewpoint of social media has changed over the last few months, but my awareness of what's possible through it has changed. For example, I never thought to use meetup or Linkedin for my business.
I definitely have a better understanding of how to use social media to develop a business, especially in terms of creating a newsletter, scheduling and experimenting with different forms of social media. I also found the research we did on our target market and possible hashtags to be helpful. I will definitely be incorporating some of those hashtags into more of my posts.
I would say that in looking at other businesses, I noticed that the ones that seemed successful and popular on social posted pretty frequently. Now I know how much work that takes, so I respect it even more. I would say some failures I noticed would be lacking authentic content and just posting promotional stuff all the time. You really have to think about what you'd personally want to see as a viewer and consumer. That's usually something more organic and fun to read.
I would also say the businesses I followed most like mine (Fam Diego and St. Louis Mom) do cute reels with music and lots of videos in general. They also do some contests, giveaways + holiday gift guides with affiliate links through Amazon and other distributors. I found a few other fun accounts, like some Oceanside foodie accounts and restaurants I want to try out. So I was able to learn a lot about my own city (and county) by doing a little social media deep dive.
I would like to try out more reels and use them on IG, FB and TikTok. I think I could have a lot of fun with that, especially using music. I don't know if my classmates were just being kind, but they all seemed excited by the possibility of a parenting blog/social account featuring fun things to do with kids in North County. It's just something I like to discover on my own anyway, so being able to build a business around it (even if it's just a small one) could be a lot of fun. And who knows? It could even turn into something bigger one day.
Thanks for all the tips and guidance!
