Week 8 Part B: My Instagram Hashtag Use

I did a couple posts about things we did recently in the San Diego area that other families might enjoy: going to these vintage trailers in San Clemente (not technically SD but close to North County!) and checking out a Halloween house in Oceanside.

I used the hashtags #vintagetrailer #sanclemente #sandiegolife #familyvacay #campingsandiego #halloweensandiego2022 #oceanside and #oceansidecalifornia. I found them after following a bunch of other local accounts + through the research we did on other businesses (Part A). They were all specific to my business in that they were local travel or family related.

I posted around 9am for both, honestly because that's when I had a minute before work! But I'll be experimenting with other times to see. I know for my job we usually post between 10-3 but I wonder if that's different for people with kids. Maybe they look at their phones after bedtime... around 9pm or something.

So far I think it's just people in my class liking my posts, and I've had a few scammers or advertising people follow me just to ask if I want their ad package. But I'm also getting some local follows (people I've followed who are following me back).

I learned from this exercise to be more careful about who I let follow me, and not to just accept every request. Those ad companies are pretty predatory and since my company is family-based with photos of my kids (though I am keeping them far enough away that their faces aren't recognizable), I should be choosy in who I accept/what I post.

I liked and commented on Encinitas Donuts and Inglourious Bagels on IG. (I also took my kids to Inglourious Bagels last weekend to check it out after seeing their fun content online.) And then I posted comments on the blogs of Encinitas Donuts and Purple Tsunami.

Comments

  1. I like that you're thinking through a different lens for your posting times especially because of the market you want to advertise to. There are popular times to post for a business, but busy parents have a different schedule. Congrats on getting some local followers!

  2. I also got a few scammers asking me to subscribe to their add. Thanks for sharing and I can't to take my family camping soon!

  3. I hate the bots haha ever since I've been using hashtags I get so many bot comments. I think it's a good idea to mitigate who can follow you. I would say just watch out for those bot comments and delete them as soon as possible.

Week1A: My Spooky Blog Theme

Welcome to my blog! I chose this theme because, well, fall is approaching and my daughter and I love Halloween. Why not get in the "spirit" already? This coral/orange color felt urgent but also fun! I felt this theme had a clean, user-friendly look too-- which is likely what you want when you have people quickly scrolling through content, right? I changed a few of the fonts to make them more legible (no italics, for example). I'm planning to make some more adjustments depending on how many photos I use and whether the format is working in terms of the content I'm putting out.  *Noting here that I wrote these as three separate paragraphs, but the theme joined them all together. I even tried altering the html language... to no avail. Anyway, I need to figure out how to create separate paragraphs on this blog! Let the learning experience begin!

Week 12 Part A: Using Business Specific Online Tools

Since my business is community and collaboration-based, I found these sites very fun to research.  I first joined a few groups on LinkedIn: Conscious Parenting, Mindful Parenting, and San Diego 411. I'm interested to see how they play out and what messages come up on each group. I'll check back later this week. I also searched for some groups on MeetUp. I used to go to MeetUps in NYC when I had just moved there and was looking for friends. I did meet some nice people, though I also encountered a lot of odd men who just came to the MeetUps to meet women. So with MeetUp now, I would definitely be very selective in which groups I posted on or events I attended. I joined MomsNightOut so far. I didn't see too many parenting groups in there, so that could certainly be a good opportunity for me to create a couple MeetUp events for North County parents! In the same vein, I could try posting things on Eventbrite, since I often use that to find local events. I don't think Google ...

Week 17: Wrapping It Up

I had a great time playing around with different social posts in this class and learning about new social platforms + some of my classmates' businesses. It's really cool to see how people right in my community are working hard to make their businesses as good as they can be! I don't think my viewpoint of social media has changed over the last few months, but my awareness of what's possible through it has changed. For example, I never thought to use meetup or Linkedin for my business. I definitely have a better understanding of how to use social media to develop a business, especially in terms of creating a newsletter, scheduling and experimenting with different forms of social media. I also found the research we did on our target market and possible hashtags to be helpful. I will definitely be incorporating some of those hashtags into more of my posts. I would say that in looking at other businesses, I noticed that the ones that seemed successful and popular on social p...
