Week 9 Part A: Blogs, Vlogs, Podcasts & Webinars

Adding a personal touch to a post seems to make sense when the business involves, well, people! So basically probably every business. I think the point made here is a good one-- it all depends on the tone of the piece. Obviously for something recreational like my business (sharing fun things for families to do together), it can be more casual and relaxed. But for someone whose business is, say, a funeral home, you're not going to be making puns and using a lot of exclamation points. It's going to be respectful and empathetic in tone. Perhaps the blog could be advice on writing an obituary or how to help someone who is grieving. I don't know why I chose this example, it's very dark! But it's the first thing I thought of!

Blogs or vlogs would absolutely work for my business. I can do more seasonal posts like "Top 5 pumpkin patches in North County" "Shortest lines for Santa in San Diego" OR more evergreen ones like "3 affordable staycation itineraries in San Diego" "Managing tantrums and expectations on family trips" or "5 snacks I always keep in the car" (this one could even include affiliate links).

As for other businesses to think about, I'll use Encinitas Donuts as an example since I follow them. Maybe they could do a fun vlog showing how they make donuts or a reel of images showcasing a busy weekend morning. Another fun post might be "Best donut and drink pairings".

The other business I thought of right away was my partner's side project: a website where he reviews tech products. He does a lot of posts about new products on the market (unboxings and that sort of thing) with affiliate links. My dad also runs a business on fishing shows. Perhaps he could do a vlog like "I mapped out your next fishing show visit for you!" or interview the owner of La Paz Sportfishing at his booth.

Other types of businesses that might not be able to use this style of outreach could be ones with legal concerns, perhaps hospitals or law firms where client and patient confidentiality is supreme. You obviously can't tell a patient story using their real name, or do a post offering legal advice or providing medical diagnoses. Those are just a couple examples!

I'm excited by the possibility of doing some blog posts about family events and tips in North County!

Comments

  1. I like your blogging/vlogging idea would work really well with your business! It would really show other people what your business is about and would really attract more people to your business. I like that you mentioned affiliate links because adding them could really help you earn more money.

  2. I also think businesses such as a hospital are not suitable to use this style. When we use this style in our post, we have to think about that is it the correct situation.

Week 17: Wrapping It Up

I had a great time playing around with different social posts in this class and learning about new social platforms + some of my classmates' businesses. It's really cool to see how people right in my community are working hard to make their businesses as good as they can be! I don't think my viewpoint of social media has changed over the last few months, but my awareness of what's possible through it has changed. For example, I never thought to use meetup or Linkedin for my business. I definitely have a better understanding of how to use social media to develop a business, especially in terms of creating a newsletter, scheduling and experimenting with different forms of social media. I also found the research we did on our target market and possible hashtags to be helpful. I will definitely be incorporating some of those hashtags into more of my posts. I would say that in looking at other businesses, I noticed that the ones that seemed successful and popular on social p...

Week 13 PartB: Developing Online Advertising

I created a few potential ads for FB and Instagram above. In my next attempt, I need to figure out how to alter the copy below the image. I tried doing a couple of general ads and then a few that boosted some of my more popular posts.  I've done Twitter ads for a website before and those seemed easy to create/monitor, so in the future, I would definitely try to do some on Twitter for North County Fam.  For social ads, I think my main objective would be to build brand awareness, establish an online presence and engage with people. I'm not selling anything (yet), so I'd just be utilizing the ads to get more people to my social pages and subscribe to my newsletter.

Week1A: My Spooky Blog Theme

Welcome to my blog! I chose this theme because, well, fall is approaching and my daughter and I love Halloween. Why not get in the "spirit" already? This coral/orange color felt urgent but also fun! I felt this theme had a clean, user-friendly look too-- which is likely what you want when you have people quickly scrolling through content, right? I changed a few of the fonts to make them more legible (no italics, for example). I'm planning to make some more adjustments depending on how many photos I use and whether the format is working in terms of the content I'm putting out.  *Noting here that I wrote these as three separate paragraphs, but the theme joined them all together. I even tried altering the html language... to no avail. Anyway, I need to figure out how to create separate paragraphs on this blog! Let the learning experience begin!
